My favorite story involves two particularly patriotic squirrels who wanted to have the best nest in the neighborhood.
Patriotic squirrel steals U.S. flags to build its nest

PORT HURON, Mich. – Squirrel. Thief. Patriot.
A brazen squirrel has been grabbing small American flags in a Port Huron, Mich., cemetery and carrying them to its nest, which looks like it was decorated by Betsy Ross.
“He plucks them right off,” said Ron Ceglarek, superintendent of Mount Hope Cemetery in Port Huron.
Every Memorial Day, volunteers place the flags next to the graves of nearly 1,000 veterans buried at Mount Hope Cemetery about 55 miles northeast of Detroit. The flags were undisturbed during a Mass held Monday.
Workers at the cemetery on Tuesday noticed several flags had been torn off their wooden staffs, which were still in the ground, the Port Huron Times-Herald reported.
Ceglarek spotted the furry-tailed thief in action and followed him back to his nest, 45 feet up a spruce tree, which was bedecked in bunting. “If I didn’t see it, and I didn’t follow the squirrel, I never would have believed it.”
“Maybe they are trying to tell us it is going to be a hard winter,” Ceglarek said of the robbing rodent.
“Why use leaves when you can get flags?”
