Maybe the Cutest Animal on the Planet

April 28, 2011 Leave a comment

I used to work with a guy who said that when he died he wanted to be reincarnated as a river otter.  His rational was that he would then be able to spend his days lazily floating down a river eating fish.  I don’t know if I want to be reincarnated as an otter, but I sure love watching them play at the zoo.  They just may be the cutest animal on the planet.

Fabulous Fossa

April 8, 2011 1 comment

Oh Hai!

So just what is a fossa you ask? At least I did.  They have serious cute potential that’s for sure.

Fossa are cat like carnivores that live on the island of Madigascar.  The fossa is usually less than a meter in length, with the tail being the same size as the body.

The fossa’s favorite food is lemur, and they can often be spotted leaping through the trees to catch dinner.  Despite beign ultra cute, fossa are fierce predators and their prey rarely escapes once spotted.   They are mostly nocturnal, but have also been known to hunt during the day.  When not jumping from tree to tree fossa walk flatfooted on the ground like bears rather than on their toes like the cats they resemble.

Baby fossa aren’t are born fierce, however.  They are toothless, blind, and dependent on their mothers for the first year of their life.  They don’t even venture out of their nests for the first four months of life.

TCTBR: Too Cute to Be Real

January 29, 2010 Leave a comment

Oh Hai,

Again I am behind the times because this cutie pie has been all over the net, but I just cannot believe how mind blowingly adorable the Kirk’s Dik-dik is.

Kirk’s Dik-dik

The Kirk’s Dik-dik (Madoqua kirkii) is a small antelope found in eastern and southwestern Africa. It grows to 28 inches in length and weighs up to 15 pounds when full grown. It has a reddish-brown head and a tail that is 14-22 inches long.  The cutie’s name comes from the alarm call it makes when threatened.   Like other antelopes, the dik-dik feeds on trees, shrubs, and grasses. These animals prefer open space with short grass, and will move to a new location if the grass becomes too tall for them to see clearly.   For shelter, dik-diks hide in shrubs and sometimes tunnels, often in dry stream beds. The dik-dik also happens to be water-independent, ingesting all of the water it needs from its diet.  These antelope typically live in pairs and raise their children cooperatively.

While the adults are extremely adorable, it is the tiny sized babies that will really blow your mind.  Enjoy!
