What exactly is a Pudu you ask? The Pudu is an adorable tiny deer that can be found only in the dense forests of Chile and Argentina. There are two species of pudu: the northern pudu, which grows to about 12 to 14 inches tall, and the southern or Chilean pudu, which is a bit taller at 14 to 16 inches. This tiny dog size wonder is a vegetarian, making its meals mostly from grass, leaves, and fallen fruit. Because of their tiny size the Pudu is constantly looking out for predators such as cougars, foxes, and owls. When chased, they run in a zigzag pattern, making them hard to catch. They are also excellent jumpers, sprinters and climbers, which comes in hugely handy when being threatened by a predator. Pudus like to be alone and only meet up with others when they wish to mate. They spend their days following an intricate series of paths they create in the forest where they can find food and shelter. Unfortunately, like with so many amazingly cute creatures, the Pudu is endangered because their habitat is being lost.
